Two Club Members, each with unique experience in Healthcare have agreed to lead the project. Richard Norman has served as Chairman of the Board for MHMH and oversaw the affiliation with TriHealth. Nathan Simmons is Director of Pharmacy for MHMH/TriHealth and Bethesda Butler Hospitals and serves on the Board of the Family Resource Center. Rotarian Ralph Gutowski "Prints" Straps![]() ![]() Ralph found a file on the internet containing a design that would work on his 3D printer. He downloaded a file and printed off a dozen of these surgical mask straps, which have NIH approval. After meeting Angie’s and his sons’ needs, he turned to Pam Collins, Chief Patient Services Officer at McCullough-Hyde Hospital to see if they could use them. Pam replied enthusiastically, “We sure could!” To maximize production, Ralph tweaked the original file in Meshmixer and duplicated the design to now print four straps at a time. So his 3D printer ran all weekend and on Monday morning it was “Rotary to the Rescue.” Ralph delivered 75 of these ear-saving surgical mask straps to Pam Collins at McCullough-Hyde. ![]() Ralph’s son, Jeff, reached out to colleagues and faculty in Miami’s College of Engineering who have 3D printers to get involved with supplying the hospital. Ralph uploaded the “build files” to “the cloud” so others can download them and help meet the demand, and now Miami Engineering faculty are contributing, too. If you, or anyone you know, has a 3D printer and would like to join the project, please contact Ralph (rgutowski@woh.rr.com). For readers with a thirst for the technical details: The straps are printed using a filament of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) made from corn, extruded at a temperature of 220 deg. C (428 deg F). Each strap requires 1.5 meters of filament and it takes 1 hour 15 minutes to print them four at a time (on Ralph’s hobby printer). |

Ashley Jones on "Preserving Your Heritage Collections"![]() May 10, 2017. Ashley Jones is the Preservation Librarian at the Miami University Libraries, where she handles a variety of roles including preservation planning, book repair, disaster preparedness, and digital preservation. She holds a B.F.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design and and MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. In her presentation, Ashley focused on the details of how to best maintain family collections. Of importance is maintaining photos, documents and collectibles in a consistent temperature - something often overlooked with most storage occurring in attics and basements. Today's digital capabilities offer a great options to scan photos and documents but organizing digital files and paying attention to file formats is key to making these digital images useful for the long term. For questions on how to maintain specialized items, Ashley can be reached at jonesab2@miamioh.edu. |

Brett Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of McCullough-Hyde/TriHealth, updated Rotarians on new developments taking place in the hospital since TriHealth became a 60% partner in the hospital in 2015. Brett focused on the newly built Emergency Department, the construction of 3 new state-of-the-art operating theaters, and the opening of a second endoscopy suite within the Operating Room area. As a result of requirements of the ACA legislation (ObamaCare) McCullough-Hyde/TriHealth was required to update it's patient records system which TriHealth's corporate team led last summer. The new system is now installed and allows patient information to be shared across healthcare providers, a very powerful tool that greatly increases patient care. |

WELCOME NEWEST ROTARIAN
President Bryan introduced Bob Keller, University Architect, who has many responsibilities touching on numerous aspects of the physical facilities at the University. Born into a family of brick masons, Bob when asked by his grandfather about his future, responded that he would continue in the family tradition, but the grandfather urged Bob to become an architect. He did just that. Following many years of study, including a time in London, Bob worked for some time in the Dayton area. He joined the Miami staff in 1989. Again, welcome, Bob.
HEFNER FUND
Upon recommendation of the Rotary Board, Club members agreed to increase the Hefner Fund contribution by $10.00 a quarter, making the total contribution $45 per quarter for each member. This increase will add support to the mission of the Hefner Fund to reach out to charitable ventures within the community. Bob Miller and Alan Oak have volunteered to serve as members of the Hefner Fund Board.
THE COLD WAR AND THE SYMBOLS OF LOVE
Susie Sadler brought the club's memories of a dark period in both the history of the nation and also of our local area, in the still somewhat mysterious area known as Fernald. Susie introduced Jane Powell, director of the Fernold Site and Visitors Center. From 1951 through 1989, 7000 workers were employed on the site processing uranium. Although there never was a reactor or weapon, secrecy surrounded the facility. After a 10 year major cleanup effort, the area has been turned into a visitors center and a nature reserve.
In contrast to mystery and secrecy, Dodi Wolke's program introduced clum members to the amazingly complex process of growing, transporting and marketing the symbols of love that may eventually overcome nuclear power. Dodi brought Norm Gormann, a major distributor from Cincinnati, who took us step by step from the planting of seeds to providing the final bouquet in the hands of loved ones.
Dodi announced the beginning of a program to award bouquets to those recommended as worthy recipients in the community. This is a generous program by Ball Flowers to enhance the life of the community.
